Musicians today need to be more able than ever to tackle any task. One minute you may be playing a Bach Minuet while the next in a pit orchestra reading scores for a new musical and after that improvising with a jazz band. The modern musican needs to be in no small way well-rounded.
Michael Muelling is a native of West Bend, Wisconsin who moved to Seattle after graduating from the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire in December 2008 with a degree in Music Education - Instrumental Emphasis, where he studied the violin under the guidance of Nobuyoshi Yasuda.
Michael has been playing the violin since age 5. Coming from a musical family, his father was an orchestra teacher for over 30 years and both of his parents taught private lessons at the house. This immersion into music for his whole life has given Michael a deep appreciation for the power of music.
While a youngster, Michael was instructed by his parents in the Suzuki Method. At the age of 8 he entered and won a local concerto competition. To expand his musical knowledge he learned to play the piano as well as bass in 5th grade, but in high school decided to focus on the violin, although still played bass in the Jazz Band as well as a small jazz combo that played locally. In high school he participated in the high school orchestra as well as a string trio, which performed in the greater West Bend area.
In college, Michael played with the University Orchestra, the Chamber Orchestra, University Opera performances, Eau Claire Children's Theater, Eau Claire Theater Guild, Musical Masquers, as well as various recitals and other community events. These experiences exposed Michael to a wide range of music, including standard classical repertoire, musicals, operas, jazz, and many other forms of music.
Currently Michael is residing in Mountlake Terrace, WA teaching private lessons at Kennelly Keys Music. He is also the Director of Instrumetal Music at the Sky Valley Educaion Center in Monroe, WA where he teaches orchestra, band, drums, and other music classes.
You may see him playing live around the area at Imprint Church in Bothell, Imprint Church in Woodinville or occasionally other venues.
When not playing or teaching you may find Michael experimenting and recording in his home studio, working in his garden, or exploring the Pacific Northwest with his daughter and wife.
